Liposuction is a form of body contouring and fat reduction that physically removes the fat cells from under the skin. During the procedure, an anesthetic is used — general or local, depending on the size and location of the area being worked on — to numb the patient, and the fat is suctioned out. There are different techniques used for the extraction of fat, but the overall principle remains the same.
Over the years, liposuction has evolved to become less painful and more safe. At Preserve your Pretty Skin and Body, we’re always looking to ensure the safety and comfort of our patients, and as a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Myla is always learning the latest techniques to maintain the highest level of expertise.
In addition to traditional liposuction, here are a few of the different liposuction techniques available:
Ultrasound-assisted liposuction has become increasingly popular recently. Under local anesthesia, small incisions are made and the same technique used in traditional liposuction is followed: cannulas are inserted between the muscle and skin to suction out stubborn fat.
This procedure, however, introduces ultrasound waves to melt the fat cells and make them easier to remove. It can also reduce injury to surrounding tissue.
Similar to ultrasound-assisted liposuction, the laser-assisted technique uses small incisions and cannulas, but instead of ultrasound waves, it uses a low-energy laser. The laser heats and liquefies the fat cells. The fat is then removed with less pain and a shorter recovery time.
Tumescent liposuction is the least invasive of these techniques, and it involves the use of microcannulas (.9mm-3mm in diameter). This means that the incisions made during the procedure are hardly visible once they’re healed.
This form of liposuction gets its name from the tumescent anesthesia used locally to separate fat cells from other tissues like muscle and skin. This reduces the risk of bruising and swelling. It is good for targeting small fatty bulges and can remove up to 3.5 liters of fat.
