What does it mean to be board certified?
While all doctors must obtain a medical license, they’re not required to become board certified. Board certification is a voluntary process, which relates to expertise in a medical specialty like plastic surgery.
Dr. Myla is a board certified plastic surgeon. She owns Preserve your Pretty Skin and Body, which is a luxury plastic surgery facility and medical spa located in John’s Creek, Georgia.
Why Does Board Certification Matter?
Board certification matters because:
- Your doctor must be certified and highly qualified for a complicated procedure like surgery.
- Board certified doctors are committed to career-long learning and training to stay up-to-date with medical advancements.
- Your doctor has at least three to five years of full-time experience from an accredited residency training program.
- Your doctor knows and demonstrates best practices for ethical behavior, HIPAA-compliant communications, and maintaining patient safety.
Board certification offers you the ultimate peace of mind. You can rest assured the safest techniques are being used by a physician who is as knowledgeable and skilled as possible in their field.
It also signifies a very high level of professionalism and a superior sense of judgment.
How Do You Become Board Certified?
In order to be eligible for board certification, a doctor must meet minimum practice time requirements as set by a Member Board. The doctor must also complete initial certification within a certain time period after completing accredited training.
There are four parts to the board certification process:
- Part I: Professionalism and Professional Standing
- Part II Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment
- Part III: Assessment of Knowledge, Judgment, and Skills
- Part IV: Improvement in Medical Practice
The first part concerns a doctor’s behavior, and it verifies that a doctor’s actions match their patients’ best interests.
The second part requires ongoing participation in educational activities, and a doctor must perform unbiased self-assessments as determined by their respective Member Board.
The third part requires passing an oral and/or written examination, and it can include other evaluative measures as well.
The fourth part requires doctors to assess their patients’ outcomes, to work toward improving them, as well as meeting peer and national benchmarks.
Board Certified Plastic Surgery
Board certified plastic surgeons show exceptional expertise in both their knowledge and skill regarding cosmetic surgical procedures and best medical practices.
In order to remain board certified, a plastic surgeon must complete 50 continuing medical education (CME) credits every three years as well as 20 patient safety CME credits.
Dr. Myla’s board certified status is a reflection of her dedication to the field of plastic surgery and caring nature. She always consults with and listens to her patients, so she can deliver satisfying and safe results!
While some cosmetic procedures are non-invasive, many involve anesthesia and surgery. You should only trust a board certified plastic surgeon to perform your surgery because your life – not just your appearance – is on the line.
