November Procedure of the Month: Tummy Tuck
This November we’re highlighting our tummy tuck service. Whether you are dealing with stubborn areas of fat around your mid-section or can’t seem to lose those extra pounds on your sides, you may be a candidate for abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck.
Dr. Myla, founder of Preserve your Pretty Skin and Body Plastic Surgery in Johns Creek, Georgia, is a board certified plastic surgeon with extensive experience in abdominoplasty. She can help you achieve the taut stomach you are looking for.
What is Abdominoplasty?
Abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, is a procedure that removes excess fat and skin from the middle and lower abdomen. While many individuals often confuse a tummy tuck with liposuction, the two procedures are very different. Liposuction simply removes stubborn fat deposits, while tummy tucks can improve the appearance of sagging or loose skin as well.
Who is a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?
We recommend a tummy tuck for individuals that regularly diet and exercise, but who are still having trouble losing loose or sagging skin. Many of our clients that undergo abdominoplasty are mothers who have experienced multiple pregnancies and would like to achieve their pre-baby bodies.
We also recommend tummy tucks for those that have lost a substantial amount of weight, but are now dealing with excess or sagging skin. A tummy tuck can reduce the amount of sagging skin by removing excess fat and skin from the middle and lower abdomen.
If you are considering having more children, a tummy tuck may not be right for you. Or, if you are still on your weight loss journey and are planning on losing more weight, we recommend putting off the procedure for the time being.
What’s Involved in a Tummy Tuck?
There are two types of abdominoplasties: Complete abdominoplasty and mini-abdominoplasty. At Preserve your Pretty Skin and Body, we will assess your unique situation and make recommendations based on your needs and desires. For both types, patients must undergo anesthesia.
Complete tummy tucks require an incision below your navel that extends from hip to hip. This version is more complex than the mini tummy tuck. For this reason, your belly button will be moved so that it fits your new abdomen.
Mini abdominoplasty requires a smaller incision, right above your pubic area. This procedure will result in smaller scars since it is less invasive.
The steps for each type of abdominoplasty are similar and include the following:
- Step 1: Anesthesia: We will administer sedation and anesthetics for your comfort.
- Step 2: The Incision: Depending on your procedure, we will either make a large or small incision right above your pubic area. Once the skin is lifted, we will repair underlying weakened muscles. The excess skin is trimmed and a new opening for the belly button is created.
- Step 3: Closing the Incisions: We will close the incision and monitor your progress following the surgery.
Tummy Tuck Results
Patients will see a dramatic difference in their abdomen following a tummy tuck within a week or two. You’ll notice a flatter, firmer abdominal contour, which will be more proportionate with your body type and weight.
